Easy Lies 03:48
Do you feel like you might not exist In the spaces in between. In between action and thought Do you fear that you are lost I'm looking in from the outside I'm on the outside looking in Know that if I could be there to wake you in the morning I'd help you get to work on time I know I can't believe in everything I tell myself I love to fall for my own lies I wanna say that nothing in this world Should lead you to self doubt You've got a right to your own space Your welcome won't wear out I'm looking in from the outside I'm on the outside looking in Know that if I could be there to wake you in the morning I'd help you get to work on time I know I can't believe in everything I tell myself I love to fall for my own lies I'm looking in from the outside I'm on the outside looking in Know that if I could be there to wake you in the morning I'd help you get to work on time I know I can't believe in everything I tell myself I love to fall for my own lies Know that if I could be there for you I'd help you get to work on time I know I can't believe in everything I tell myself I love to fall for my own lies

Hey would you believe That I don't wanna know I don't wanna know what you've been up to Since you left me on my own I don't wanna know I don't wanna feel The evidence is hidden but That don't mean it's not real It's not as if you could see That yesterday's stuck on me Finding a way through life Crushed by your alibis Hey would you believe I don't care anymore That I've reclaimed my memories Somehow I've let you go Hey would you believe I'm gonna be OK Time is wearing thin and I don't Think about you every day I thought you were 10 feet tall Perspective has made you small I won't let you push me round Cause I'm gonna stand my ground Hey would you believe It's gonna be alright Burning with intention That I'm done being polite Hey would you believe I'm gonna be OK Shouldn't have to mention I don't Think about you every day Yeah we're gonna be OK

Many years ago Minds converged to take a stand Perfect at the time Tempers flared words ensnared And that world fell down Road ran past its prime You're dreaming of the past Momentary lapse It don't matter anymore So it goes Life moves way too fast Moments never last They don't matter anymore So it goes Many years were stacked You felt the urge to bring them back Sleeping dogs aligned Tempers flared words ensnared And you lost your tact Kiss those years goodbye You're dreaming of the past Momentary lapse It don't matter anymore So it goes Life moves way too fast Movements never last They don't matter anymore So it goes You're dreaming of the past Momentary lapse It don't matter anymore So it goes Life moves way too fast Movements never last They don't matter anymore So it goes

I can't remember how we met, it could have been the supermarket Replenishing supplies, she liked to feed the strays "It's nice to be wanted, I guess i want them too" Everybody needs a place She was on the rebound from another disaster I didn't know it then how she careens Best that I could do was find a way to distract her A pinball down the middle just out of reach Cigarettes and magazines and I can't get her attention Coffee, shaking hands and ash, staring into space I'm sorry and i know it stings, but babe I got just one more thing I haven't seen her in a couple a days She passed us on the way to another catastrophe She don't need you saving her Doesn't matter anyway, you don't have the capacity Until she stumbles, she won't swerve Looking through the bars, waiting for express checkout Coming to in cars and yards, counting down the next blackout Do you know how it feels, really feels to be abandoned I think that's why she never turned them away We don't know she was thinking when she drove out to Madeira We stayed up all night to wait She was on the rebound from another disaster I know it all to well how she careened Should have done some more than just be a distraction A pinball down the middle, just out of reach

Three o'clock high Don't know where I am Not enough caffeine And I'm feeling brain dead Six days late On thirty days of slog Don't know who I am When the whole world is gone It's gone Time ticks away When distracted by your strife Sixty seven things to plan That steal away your life Facilitate escape When you're lost in your head Is this all a dream Or as real as your bed Imposter, syndrome of the universe I don't belong here any more Imposter, syndrome of the universe Something is wrong that's all I know Syndrome, imposter what's it gonna cost Can't find the thread can't find the plot Syndrome, imposter what's it gonna cost I'm breaking down my nerves are shot Three o'clock high Don't know where I am Not enough caffeine And I'm feeling brain dead Facilitate escape When I'm lost in my head Is this all a dream Or as real as my bed Imposter, syndrome of the universe I don't belong here any more Imposter, syndrome of the universe Something is wrong that's all I know Syndrome, imposter what's it gonna cost Can't find the thread can't find the plot Syndrome, imposter what's it gonna cost I'm breaking down my nerves are shot Gonna cost Gonna cost Gonna cost

Making new friends Is something I forgot Meanwhile the old ones Constantly drift apart So it surprised me When you came along You're so enticing But there's something wrong Because it never manifested And I could not have guessed it Somehow I really messed it Up it's tragic How could I not be in love with you Some kind of magic in everything you do What's wrong with me because there's nothing wrong with you How could I not be in love with you I've got a feeling I swear I'm doing fine That's my love life Inside a chalk outline Don't know if you're too good for me I can't tell up from down Hope that you're happy Guess I'll see you around Because it never manifested We have tried and we have tested And in the end I messed it Up it's tragic How could I not be in love with you There's something magical in everything you do I see the way you look at me, and I wish I felt it too I cannot seem to fall in love with you How could I not be in love with you It's a mystery, and I don't have a clue What the hell is wrong with me there's nothing wrong with you How could I not be in love with you

In every picture that I see. In it now you're younger than me I know Things don't always go as planned Keep it optimistic Always idealistic Great Expectations No explanations Did you decide what you would be On USS Abnaki I know Still the boy inside the man Get a new heuristic Time to be realistic Great explanations No expectations Waiting for a life Born at the wrong time Did you ever find What you were looking for Waiting for a life Born at the wrong time Did you ever find What you were looking for What was materialistic Is reframed as holistic Great expectations. Loss generation Waiting for a life Born at the wrong time Did you ever find What you were looking for Waiting for a life Born at the wrong time Did you ever find What you were looking for In every picture that I see. In it now you're younger than me

about

The story of “Identity Thief”, the debut full length album from Austin’s eclectic 4-piece alt-rock outfit Frogmouth, began in 2023. Jesse Hodges (vocals/guitar) and the newly joined lead guitarist Jay Ziegler began bouncing demos and ideas back and forth for what would eventually become the opening banger “Easy Lies” while their EP “Humor Me” was still in production. However work didn’t begin in earnest until the beginning of 2024, when the band took time off gigging to buckle down and write new material. By March, they were able to debut 3 new songs at a series of unofficial SXSW gigs - the Cheap Trick inspired Easy Lies, the heavier grunge-influenced Sleeping Dogs, and the plaintive ‘Strays’.

The following months were spent in the woodshed. As drummer Jordan Goldman took time off to be with his new child, Jay, Jesse and bassist Angus Barrs got together in a series acoustic sessions to pen and polish the college rock anthem “Would You Believe”, the dub-inspired “Imposter Syndrome”, and the alt-country influenced anti-love song “How Could I Not”. These new songs debuted to a soaked and enthusiastic audience at the almost rained out Austin Summer Fest in July.

By August, both “Long In the Tooth”, a punk influenced ode to a father gone too soon and “Another Body Count”, a steeped in 90s alternative guitar rock vocally ambitious tale of an existential crisis in the middle of a bank heist were ready to roll, and the band decided to enter the studio with Jason Richard at Clockright Studio in South Austin.

Over the next few months and numerous sessions, the band managed between day jobs and gigs to lay down the tracks that would become the completely self-financed Identity Thief. In early December, they went back into the studio to complete their most ambitious track on the album, “Oleander”. With lyrics co-written by Barrs and Hodges, the tune is evocative of a simpler and better time, while the music is a departure from the rest of the album, prompting Richard to exclaim upon hearing the demo “Was I just listening to New Order and then Zappa walked in!!!?”

Mixing was finished early January 2025, and Howie Weinberg was brought on to master the finished product. Frogmouth are releasing 4 singles leading up to the full album release on March 21, 2025.

Regarding the title - “Identity Thief” originally suggested by Jordan Goldman’s son Sebastian, with no obvious connection to the songs that had been written. Upon reflection however, it became apparent that themes of losing oneself (Imposter Syndrome, Strays), searching for oneself (Long In the Tooth) or straight-up thievery (Another Body Count) ran strongly throughout the entire album, and thus the name was quickly adopted.
